CHAUSSEE 36 PHOTO FOUNDATION

Was bedeutet Erotik in der Fotografie?

CHAUSSEE 36 PHOTO FOUNDATION

Founded in 2015,  CHAUSSEE 36 PHOTO FOUNDATION is a cultural institution that aids and puts to question the historicization of erotic, nude, experimental and historical photographs. Our investment lies within the socio-political impact of these photographic disciplines as well as their influence on an art historical discourse. We examine the photographic medium in all of its facets through regular exhibitions, publications and the administration of the Collection De Gambs and the Heinz Hajek-Halke Estate.

Our exhibitions are, however, not limited to the photographers within these collections but rather the overarching disciplines and surrounding research questions as they relate to contemporary photography. Questions such as: What is Experimental Photography Now?  What is Erotic Photography Now? What constitutes a historical Image?

CHAUSSEE 36 Photo Foundation collaborates with museums, private and state collections, galleries, and organisations to realise the exhibitions and events taking place in-house as well as external shows and projects.

COLLECTION DE GAMBS

The Collection de Gambs does not only acquire photographs but is also largely made up of Photography Books.

The photographic collection consists primarily of erotic, nude, experimental and berlin historical photographs from the early 20thCentury to the present day. Names such as Nobuyoshi Akari, Erwin Blumenfeld, Will McBride, Sarah Moon, Marc Riboud and Karin Székessy are only a few of the influential practices represented within the archive. These are regularly displayed in our exhibitions so they can be as accessible to the public as possible.

The Photography Books within the collection explore the same photographic disciplines that can be found in the archive, however, there is also a considerable amount of photo-historical/ theoretical books within the collection.

HEINZ HAJEK-HALKE ESTATE

The Heinz Hajek-Halke Estate houses a wide variety of vintage prints showcasing the multifaceted experimental works of the Berlin-born photographer: from the first photomontages and collages of the Weimar Republic to the cameraless light graphics of the post-war period.

Heinz Hajek-Halke (1898-1983) is one of the greatest German fine art photographers of the 20th century.

After studying painting, Hajek-Halke began working as a photographer in 1925. He shortly after achieved fame through his advertising photographs and free photomontages. Between 1946 and 1972 he developed his late work - the high point of his artistic career. It is characterised by abstract works breaking down the boundaries between photography and painting. As a pioneer of experimental photography, Hajek-Halke invented new techniques, such as the camera-less light graphic. His influence concerning photographic abstraction is comparable to that of Moholy-Nagy for Bauhaus.

The Estate aims to preserve the artist’s work in good condition and make it accessible to the public for it to find its rightful place within photographic discourses.
