Reflecting upon the city’s division, Berlin was the central theme in his early works. As a photographer and publisher for the magazine Sibylle – Zeitschrift für Mode und Kultur (Magazine for fashion and culture) amongst others, Fischer was one of the leading photographers of the GDR. He was a lecturer of photography at Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee, Fachhochschule Dortmund, Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie, Berlin, as well as a professor at Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst (HGB), Leipzig.
