Shoky van der Horst challenges existing aesthetic norms. The photo-book Brutal Beauty is the result of a long-time examination of the concept of beauty. Shoky has captured the raw beauty of forgotten and ignored objects instead of focussing on the new and flawless. As a former model and fashion editor, Shoky witnessed how our concept of beauty is influenced by the shiny worlds of fashion and luxury. Brutal Beauty shows beauty without human parameters. Patina and rust bestow sensuality to Shoky’s motifs. Beauty emerges without human interference. Pictures, patterns and structures are created by chance. With her new exhibition, Shoky points us to view in a new direction, beyond luxury and high gloss.
